Summer Melt Prevention: How Programs and Colleges Can Work Together
Limited Capacity seats available

Supporting first-time college-going, low-income, and students of color as they prepare for and transition to college requires a warm and intentional handoff. The pandemic only increased the need for a strong, cross-disciplinary, coordinated care approach that includes on- and off-campus support teams. How can educators, colleges, and college access partners best provide these essential navigation resources? What do we know about students’ experiences with summer melt and why the warm hand-off is so critical to success?

The Northern California College Promise Coalition (NCCPC) and members Beyond12, OneGoal Bay Area, Richmond Promise, and Stockton Scholars will demonstrate how they combat summer melt through data-informed, student-centered programming. NCCPC and members will also explore how data-sharing with campus partners like Cal State East Bay can streamline financial and programmatic support, even in a pandemic. We’ll explore how together, we hope to see the lessening and then elimination of wage and wealth disparities in California by using this collective impact approach as a model for other regions and states.

Data Tool Highlighting Racial Disparities in Financial Aid Completion and a Research-Driven Framework to Increase Access to Financial Aid
Limited Capacity seats available

This session will build awareness on the importance of supporting students when applying for financial aid and the significance of California’s 2021-2022 state budget, to ensure every high school senior completes a financial aid application.

In addition, Education Trust-West (ETW) Racial Disparities will present on the Financial Aid Completion data tool. The tool is the first of its kind to share data on financial aid application completion by race and ethnicity. The data tool is intended to help LEA leaders understand and address racial disparities in financial aid completion. We hope participants and others learn how to use the tool to evaluate their practices and target specific student groups for outreach, for application completion support.

In closing, this session will provide tangible resources for local education leaders to utilize which will assist in increasing financial aid application completion. We will present the Education Trust-West’s Hidden Figures: A Framework to Increase Access to Financial Aid. This original research briefly highlights five “components of success” – insights from diverse, cutting-edge districts and schools about best practices and strategies that are helping to close equity gaps. The participants will leave the session having exchanged and learned research-driven best practices, strategies, and resources to increase access to financial aid.
